One of these (BoomSpeed) has terminated the free service due to overwhelming success. All those Mozilla guys & dolls?
The other one (Sony Image Station) only accepts JPG and these get much larger in kB-size than GIF for the same quality. But, I made a very low quality JPG and it is there now. What is the path for the Profile?
Perfect!! That's it. It is so simple I couldn't find it myself.
I still had trouble to get the final logo as I desired it to be my avatar. I wanted a transparant logo and each time I tried to upload it, the response was that the file (a GIF) was empty.
I was looking at the directory in my web space with the browser (ftp://username:password@members.chello.nl) and only then noticed that the filename there was dt7.GIF. I had each time written the URL under profile (method 2) as dt7.gif and that file was not found!!
Apparently such a link is "hoofdlettergevoelig" (case sensitive).
So, my last upload finally succeeded!!
Thanks to everybody who's responses and suggestions helped to think this out!
Maybe it is also the cause for others not being able to upload their avatar through method 2 under profile.

In my case nothing more than the spelling/typing of the filename! For one reason or another the particular file was stored at my web location as dt7.GIF rather than dt7.gif as all the others, just in undercast only. A bit silly, if you ask me.
I found out through ftp://"username":"password"@members.chello.nl which shows the files at the web location as they are.
For some 2 hours I've been trying to upload an avatar. I've had no success. I have it in .gif format on my machine and nothing happens. It was hosted on a site in .jpg but that didn't upload either. The size of them both was below 6 kb and I made them smaller and smaller and smaller... now I have a very ugly .jpg image (quality=0) that I still can't upload. None of them images I've tried aren't over 120x120 or 6 kb.
The text in the image was already illegible. But I kept trying and trying... I used another image hosting site for that 90x80/5 kb something .gif image and it didn't work. All I get is "Waiting for forums.mozillazine.org...".
The image is a real traffic sign warning about polar bears. Too bad it didn't work...
