Unable to log in - repeated captcha fails

Cannot log in - have read the discussion regarding unique vs total number as the answer for the captcha. Tried both 6 and 7 even tried the total # of letters and characters and none allows me to log in? Have been trying these numbers for several days now and still cannot log in!!! Today tried another tactic - registering with new username and password and the dreaded "how many letters" must be again answered. The number 6 worked for the registration but not for my previous member login? There is a bug that refused to allow me to log in with my olds membership for some reason.
