I just got myself a signature and I figured that it might as well be of some use. Trouble is that the hard limit of 100 characters in the signature won't allow it to reach its full potential... I'm quite sure that a nicer limit of, say, 300 characters would help a lot and still prevent people from quoting top-40 MTV crap^Wsongs in their signatures.
Also, are there any rules governing signatures?

Let's start with 200 characters, eh?

I like the rules already and I was wondering if you have a newsletter that I could subscribe to.

i'm actually kind of concered about this. i see people posting multi-line sigs, etc, and i think if you give them more characters they'll just take up even more space.
having said that, however, i think we do need more space. alan and i have been talking about how limited we've been for a while now. i think the only problem i've had with the 100-char rule is that url tags are included in that limit. my sig has two links it in, and those urls take up most of the 100 chars, which really sucks.
is there a way to keep the 100 char limit, but exclude url tags? i think this would solve the problems. i'd then be able to name my links more descriptively, while still being able to have them as links.
(did i explain all that well enough?)

Great! Finally, I don't have to compromise my sig anymore.

If it becomes a problem, the number of characters can always be reduced.

Not easily. The Administration Area provides a single field to set the limit for all users on all forums and that's it. As phpBB is open-source, I suppose it would technically be possible to implement this but I don't really want to go there.
