MozillaZine Forms are vulnerable to spam harvesters?

Post by thenightfly42 »

I use a disposable email address system (mailshell.com), so that I can cancel the addresses that generate spam. I've just cancelled my second MozillaZine email address, because I received some spam on the first two. I've never received email directly from another user (only the auto-replier), so I'm pretty sure that this is the source.

Probably nothing can be done about it, I just wanted to vent a bit.

Do you mean the "Always notify me of replies" option under your profile?

You could also select "No" for "Always show my Email Address" if you are worried about spam.

I did that after the amount of spam in my mailbox doubled (sic!) after I had posted a few times at MZ.

If you're talking about spiders getting your email address, that's because your profile makes it visible to everyone at the moment.

other BB's take you to a "mail this member" form where the actual email address is always invisible, thats much better than a mailto link..

I hope so. This is the only vBulletin board that was giving me problems. Kerz, thanks for looking into it.

'course, it's only phpBB, not vB, which explains. (Ah, if only every message board out there could be as good as vB - Just imagine... a universe free of the ezboards of this world, what bliss!) :)

well, it was in the Admin CP, but just not turned on :p

free software like phpBB and Invision Board dont need to look up to vB, in my opinion, they are even better, because they dont need to pack it with all kinds of useless crap to satisfy their paying customers..

The only problem is that web-based email sucks.
To the cast and crew of Arrested Development: Thanks for the many great laughs.
