A fundamentally important feature of Mozilla to us the ability to switch to an auto-config proxy when needed. Can this be done with a hidden preference in Chimera?

You have to set it in the Network prefpane of the System Preferences. For now.

Auto-config isn't an option in the system, it's only an option in Mozilla (or iCab, or the Windows version of Internet Explorer).
