Making Bing the default search engine?

Post by oldreporter »

I just signed up with Camino and want to use Bing as the default search engine. Under 'preferences,' I can't get Camino to include Bing. Does anyone know how to do that?

I believe there's an OpenSearch plugin for Bing, so it should be a simple matter of clicking on that popup menu in the search field and going to "Find Search Engines..." and then following the directions from there.

Hi ... when you say "click on that popup menu in the search field," I don't know what you're referring to. Where is the field, how do I get there and once there, is the popup menu obvious? Hope you can help and thank you.

The search field is the area where you type in your search, to the right of the location "field". Just click the magnifying glass icon.

The search field is, by default, the next-to-rightmost item in the toolbar, between the location bar and the Show Bookmarks button. This documentation has more detailed steps explaining how to customize search engines.

For whatever reason, Bing does not publish its own OpenSearch definition, so you'll need to use one of the ones from MyCroft, likely the first item under "12. Major Engines" in this list.

Ok .. still not working ... I went to Mycroft, clicked on Bing with an A9 and clicked on 'add to my list.' Then I went to the magnifying glass, pulled down the menu, clicked on Bing, which is now listed, then opened the gear icon and clicked on making the highlighted Bing my default.

Then I clicked on "New Window" and up came the Google search window, not the Bing search window.

I've done something wrong here ... hope you can help?

Oh, the new window is opening what is set to the home page. Change that in the general preferences.
