It might be helpful to develop a habit of using "Export Bookmarks…" on a regular basis. I do this for other reasons (can't get the Camitools "Sync" function to work right).

same with me

using the latest nightly build of camino, i turned the machine on today (intel dual core iMac) and ALL bookmarks were gone and I found the bookmarks_corrupted.plist file... this is really annoying. I never had something like this since 1996... neither on my windows or on my previous macs with any other browser. might just switch to safari... i should have a backup though (made with silver keeper).

Can you 1) check the console.log for messages from Camino from around the timestamp of the bookmarks_corrupted.plist file and 2) note those messages in the bug and attach a copy of the bookmarks_corrupted.plist to the bug?

I just had the same thing happen. Luckily I have a backup from about two weeks back, but still it's really annoying. Worse still, no bookmarks_corrupted.plist file was generated, so if I didn't have that backup I'd be in really deep_. Does anyone know of a way I could set up a cron task to do the 'Export Bookmarks...' task every five days or so and keep it in ~/.CaminoBookmarksBackup/bookmarks2006-06-25.plist or some such? I'm relatively novice at terminal type things, so any tips would be appreciated.

0nils, were there any messages in your Console.log from around the time you either last quit Camino or launched Camino to the empty bookmarks?

Also, is there anyone who's seen this bug on 10.3, or is everyone on 10.4?

The only thing I can find in console.log that relates to camino is the following:

Code: Select all

2006-06-25 20:07:31.259 Camino[1530] *** WARNING: Method runModalForWindow:relativeToWindow: in class NSApplication is obsolete and will be removed in release GM ***

And that does seem to be around the time the bookmarks disappeared (though maybe I'm getting my times mixed up)... though I don't know what it all means.
I'm using 10.4.6 and a fairly recent nightly build by wrc_fan. I would stick to point builds, except I need the search-field-resizing-whatsit to go with Inquisitor. I'm hoping the only reason I lost bookmarks is because it's a nightly build... that would be even more disturbing if it happened with regular builds.

On a separate but related note, would adding this to /var/cron/tabs/*user_name* work?

Code: Select all

0   0   *   *   0   cp ~/Library/Application\ Support/Camino/bookmarks.plist ~/.CaminoBookmarksBackup/bookmarks.`date +%Y%m%d`.plist

This is just out of curiosity, mind, because I don't really know about these command-prompt things so well and it might be nice to have a more recent backup of my bookmarks.

None of that has anything to do with your missing bookmarks, unfortunately.

Search your console.log for "failed to write file" (no quotes) and see if that turns anything up.

If not, try searching for "bookmarks".

OK, those last three lines are the same thing we've been seeing -- just a general error, no more information.

So far, we're suspecting a Spotlight interaction. That this occurred three times within an hour is interesting, though -- no one else has had it happen more than once, and therefore no one else has been able to reproduce.

Do you have any idea what else might have been going on during the time window from 0050 to about 0150 on 25 June?

i try to open ~/Library/Application Support/Camino/bookmarks-corrupted-1.plist and OmniOutliner opens up, but an error message appears and says that it cannot be hopened. so it's not exactly empty, but just can't be opened. this stinks.

Possibly related, or possibly completely spurious, but why in the @$@#$@# is OmniOutliner trying to load your bookmarks file (or the corrupted versions thereof)?

NM, I just saw your post. Opt-drag the file onto TextEdit, which will open it as text without attempting to validate it.

If there's nothing personal in that file (the corrupted one), we'd certainly appreciate you attaching it to the bug so the dev team can take a look at it....

Maybe it took over the LS association to .plist files?
