Australis Home and Bookmark buttons

Post by malliz »

Is anyone going to do an extension or some fancy xml binding code to revert the home and bookmark buttons? Maybe Alice or perhaps Patrick (or both) ?
I originally asked this in the Australis whinge thread in builds but I was afraid it would get buried in the goodbye cruel world posts and it is actually relevant and important to me and probably others

The 'Classic bookmarks button' restores the known bookmarks button functionality.

I'm also working on a few other 'Fx UX gui projects' at least until Mozilla breaks them.

The buttons being asked about are a lot more 'classic' than that, and go back to 2003. They are the Bookmark and History toolbar buttons that toggle the Bookmark Sidebar and History Sidebar.

As long as the default sidebar code does not get removed from Firefox, both buttons can be restored, like on latest UX for example.

FYI guys, there *are* plans to ditch the sidebar stuff completely. When that happens it's still not totally a lost cause as the sidebar code was pretty primative and only a few steps shy of a DIY implementation to begin with. The hard part will be the fact that the Bookmarks and History sidebars used completely different UI than any of the other remaining B/H interfaces. It will be interesting to follow what SeaMonkey does in regards to this. If SM had private browsing I'd have already migrated over by now... but PB is the only way to use Firefox at work.

Do you mean sidebars themselves or just the bookmarks/history sidebars?

It would appear that it now does - http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releas ... 18/changes

Thanks Frank... when I get free time in my life to twitter away in code-land for free again, I might actually look into what it takes to build SM themes again.... the last time I looked into it was pretty long ago.

So... the word "completely" is meaningless to you then?

I wasn't sure because I remember reading that they were implementing sidebars in the jetpack SDK.

They are supposed to be doing lots of things in jetpack but Mozilla's hen with it's head cut off method of development has seen that lurching along like a legless Zombie

If they did add sidebars into Jetpack, that would give them a reason excuse to cull the old XUL sidebar stuff out. Which would place extension developers in a rather awkward position where even though it's in the SDK some would probably create custom XUL implementation.

Perhaps you should follow the UX Branch Discussion • mozillaZine Forums

Aris is developing a nice extension.

The upcoming add-on (still unreleased and wip) will allow Firefox users to optionally restore some 'classic' ui parts, that are not present in Australis anymore. Users will be able to test these options once Australis enters nightly channel.

Adding a 'star-button' to urlbar would not be a problem, but its functionality.
In my tests the 'star-button' was only useable, if the bookmarks menu button stayed on navigation toolbar (OK, its visibility could be hidden or collapsed).

Some side effects:
- the bookmarks popup appeared below identity box not below 'star-button'
- moving the bookmarks menu button to another toolbar or removing it, caused the star button to disappear, to break or to do nothing
- bookmarked / not bookmarked status randomly changed

I decided to not include a non-working or half-working feature into the upcoming add-on.
