I am unable to get into the default theme because I have no archive handler that can open omni.ja. I have now managed to patch all the themes that I use to display all the developer tools (by extensive borrowing). I found that you need to have either light-theme.css or dark-theme.css, but not necessarily both.

Would you happen to know of a Mac OS archive utility that can open omni.ja?

Try renaming to .jar or .zip first. Although it's an exotic ZIP format that Mozilla *claims* is Vanilla but most ZIP utilities won't open it and the ones that do throw errors.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

I'm using WinRar to open omni.ja after renaming it to omni.jar on Windows.

A MacOS version (command line only) can be downloaded from rarlab. http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

Also, 7zip is available for OSX I believe.

Windows 7-zip version cannot extract omni.ja since Fx 10 or 11.

I tried that one, but there is no instruction on how to use unrar, and what I tried with the Terminal did not work.

If you ask Mozilla, they will probably tell you want they told me which is to use some command-line stuff that is super alien to me and I could never get to work.
