I like this version better. And to anser the question "what will it look like at 48x48, 32x32, and 16x16"...
Note that even at 48x48, you can't read the month and year or days, but you can tell there is writing in the calendar day boxes, so I would think that's good enough.

Looking good. The colors contrast better and at 48px the calendar is still recognizable. Comparing the graphic with the Thunderbird logo, this one is a bit more crisp and the TB logo makes nice use of shadows. Should we consider trying to emulate that style?

If you ask me, those last few sets of icons look like an ancient version of Windows. No, I'm sorry, I really hate those icons, we live in the "XP" age now...

Just as was explained with Winstripe, let's wait until the final version before making snap decisions. Granted they're a little flat right now, but mark had 2 days to work on them.. Give it time to evolve, and we'll see where it goes..

Mark:

I like the bird better in this new version, but i think the calender's blue contrasts quite sharply with the gold/yellow.. perhaps a lighter shade of blue? I might be the only one who feels this way though.. everyone else might think contrast is good, so just an opinion :-)

Edit: BTW.. i can still see the 2004.. barely, but can still see it ;)

AT 48x48?!

methinks someone's eyeballs had an over-active surge of imagination :)

The logo will be used at full size in the ABOUT dialog though, if they do the same as with FF and TB.

Okay, but Mark's comment only applied to 48x48 and lower.

As an aside, having it at 2004 for the full size isn't necessarily a negative. The team could decide that it makes sense having the year of the logo's/Sunbird's creation as part of the logo?

@markcarson:

a suggestion: please let the week in the icon start on monday... okay, in the small versions it is unnoticeable, but it's a strange english behaviour to let the week start on sunday?!?!

Another reason not to include text in the icon, beside it being not localizable. And imo, it looks crowded. Please try to remove it, and see how it looks.

Well, we can carry the localization concern even further than just the text. I believe the Gregorian calendar is a distinctly European concept, no?

Not to be cultrually insensitive to those whose convention is to start the week on other days, but (and you have an atheist quoting here) Sunday was the first day according to Genesis. Personally, when I was growing up, I always thought it was odd that the weekend day appear split on calendars, but we have to follow some convention (localization) or else we remove the year, month, and day names. And are we assuming everyone uses arabic numerals? Maybe the day number should go also (as suggested in a previous post). We can only agree to disagree. Maybe the month and day names should be written using a Klingon font :-) That way no one is offended and no one is pleased either.

Different subject. A lot of the suggestions regarding the toolbar icons are interesting, but try to render some of the submissions down to 16x16 and see what they look like first. 24x24, and especially 16x16, are very small canvaases to work with. As the icon size goes up, so do the artistic options (which I'm all for). If we are trying for the standard icon sizes, the view icons I made are about all I can think up for now. The event (add, delete, edit) are another matter. I like the idea of using the big red X icon from Winstripe, so long as that is appropriate for object involved. "Don't create when you can steal (make that repurpose)". By the way, the Add and Delete icons (with the winstripe green and red circular sub-icons) can easily be flipped side to side to put the action on the right side of the icon.

Just had a thought, in the About box, does localization apply programatically? If so, then the app could bring up a large copy of the logo based on the language used. Meaning, I would be happy to make the large icon in multiple versions for languages/cultures supported and hopefully a logo appropriate would appear in the About page and everyone would be happy. The 48x48 and below have unreadable text, so they are not (I say again) an issue.

It seems the only acceptable solution then is to have the About size picture an ani-gif that transitions between each of these:
excerpt wrote:This is the calendar FAQ. Its purpose is to give an overview of the Christian, Hebrew, Persian, and Islamic calendars in common use. It will provide a historical background for the Christian calendar, plus an overview of the French Revolutionary calendar, the Maya calendar, and the Chinese calendar.
.
Then, for the European variations, the ani-gif ought to pay particular attention to the dates so as to synchronize the display according to this algorthym.

Mark, can you finish a first draft of this by this afternoon?

Nice to know we have not lost out sense of humor while drowning in minutia :-)
Seriously, I would make variations of the logo in other languages and start day conventions if this can be supported in the app. Anyone know the techincal feasability of doing this (localized image URL via a CSS attribute I'm thinking).
