Indeed the attributes are not removed (yet).
As for the compatibility, I am referring to FF3.0 and even FF2.0 which don't have those selectors yet.
Luckily my themes don't use these attributes, so my themes are not impacted by this chance.

But the :first-child, :last-child and the adjacent selector, as pointed from dao-g, work on FF 3.0 and 2.0 (also 3.1) and could be maybe even better then use first-tab, last-tab and afterselected attributes. It seems, as far as I can see from some threads on this section, Firefox has sometimes problems setting those attributes.

:first-child and :last-child existed in 2.0, although I assume they couldn't be used for the tab bar, due to bug 73586 (fixed for gecko 1.9).
And yeah, the legacy attributes aren't always updated correctly, which is one reason for getting rid of them.
