Addons - do they cleanup on uninstall?

Post by BruceAWittmeier »

When you uninstall an addon does the uninstall clean up any associated files with the addon?
If I uninstall AdblockPlus -- restart my browser -- and reinstall the addon will it be a clean installation?
Or should I start a new profile?
I often take a long windy road to my destination. Upon arrival, I wonder how I missed the shortcut.

Entirely up to the addon. The Firefox install process itself will leave behind everything: files; preferences; database entries; storage; etc. Reinstall and it will be like you never left :) Best practice is for addons to clean up after themselves, but most don't and very few do it 100%.

Just thinking about AdblockPlus and uBlock -- do they share or have their own copy of EasyList? Others?

The short answer is generally, no.

But there is an extension that will remove preferences and other flotsam and jetsam. It is Clean Uninstall.

It is e10s-compatible, though it is not a WebExtension (it's a JetPack/SDK extension). I do not know whether the author intends to make a WebExt version, but in the meantime you can use it thru Fx 56.

Thanks for the suggestion. The addon just isn't updated for Fx 57 yet but I'll keep checking it.

I have a version of "Thunderbrowse" from Thunderbird that just won't go away! There is a bug open on it as well.

I assume TB has about:config ?
Uninstall extension, go there, search for any bold 'Thunderbrowse' user set/modified entries, right click and Reset.. Restart Fx.

Thanks! This was indeed a clue.

I put in thunderbrowse, and it is showing two entries:

1) extensions.newAddons with a value of {1A2D0EC4-75F5-4c91-89C4-3656F6E44B68},{a300a000-5e21-4ee0-a115-9ec8f4eaa92b},{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103},{a0faa0a4-f1a7-4098-9a74-21efc3a92372},ThunderBrowse@thunderbrowse.com,{58D4392A-842E-11DE-B51A-C7B855D89593},{a62ef8ec-5fdc-40c2-873c-223b8a6925cc},{d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d}

2) mailnews.start_page.url with a value of http://start.thunderbrowse.com/

I don't want to touch either of these until I figure out what to do with them.
