Addon to display upload/download speeds
Seems to me most browsing is done online.
Has anyone considered an Addon that would display upload/download speeds in realtime while online? Similar to speedtest.net but just display the upload & download speeds.

I often take a long windy road to my destination. Upon arrival, I wonder how I missed the shortcut.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
Hi Bruce,
I haven't done an ADDONS search, so do not know if an extension is available.
There may be....?
These are not extensions but will do exactly what you require.
All are free.
Look for netmeter & networx & bitmeter.

They all work fine & just sit in the System Tray with lots of options.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
I doubt a WebExtension would have access to all the upload/download info.
For example, I couldn't tell how much telemetry data the app uploads or how much update data the app downloads.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
LIMPET235 thanks for the links.
I searched and the only one I found was Speedtest.net but it requires a click to launch on the toolbar/wait time to load/click to start -- then wait while it calculates the U/D speeds. Just hopin' someone knew of a display for U/D speeds.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
Bruce,
Limpet235 referenced a program that I have used for years, Networx. However the link that he gave " https://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ " will only lead you to a trial of their latest release (currently 7.0.2). The last FREE version was 5.5.5 and you can find this at " https://archive.org/details/networx_setup_202005 " --- download the "Windows Executable".
[Bitmeter2 has similar functions, but I preferred the look, feel, and operation of Networx. On the plus side though Bitmeter2 remains free while the latest versions of Networx are paid versions. Netmeter also appears to be free, but I have no experience with it.]
Networx is not a browser extension or add-on; it is a separate program that can be set to run at Windows startup. Among its features is a re-sizable and scrolling graphic that can also be adjusted to varying degrees of transparency and "click-through". This graphic shows all the constant realtime uploading and downloading that goes on, and on the edges of the graphic are calibrations indicating the various speeds involved. There are other features as well, such as the NetStat feature which can be opened as a separate window, if desired. NetStat shows which applicatons/programs are connected to the internet and their various upload ("sent") and download ("received") speeds.
I highly recommend this little program.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
v_v you and I offered NetWorx to another poster looking to discover what is using his bandwidth. I too have used NetWorx muchly but not more than to track usage as we are on Verizon Mifi's with limited data -- charges for overage go up quickly. I will take a look again. Thanks.
OnEdit:
I get a ping time but "not available" for the 4 speed readings. Don't know if it is temporary -- will keep checking.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
Just to update the info...
Bruce, I've been running netmeter for years & it does what you require.
It's fully customizable & works fine.
Again...It is not an extension.
None of the links are....They are all stand alone, programs that you install..
Go to the netmeter link & read the information provided.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
LIMPET235 and v_v -- those are probably the closest I will get to what I would like if it eventually works for me. I'll keep trying.
Thanks to both of you for your help.
Ah-ha...it worked. Pretty sad numbers but it worked.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
Bruce,
From your two last posts and the image, it seems that you are referring to the "Speed Meter" aspect of Networx. I hardly ever---mostly never---use that aspect, and much of the time it says "Not Available" for me also. What I constantly use though is the "Graph" aspect, which I have re-sized to be anchored in the right side and corner of my monitor screen (with the Window Opacity set at 70 % and both "Always on top" and "Click-through" enabled). This gives me real-time, moment to moment scrolling graphs of uploads and downloads (in the histogram/bar format that I have chosen), with calibrated numbers to the right informing me of the speeds used; and also there are real-time moment to moment numbers listed under the graph indicating the upload and download speeds. I find the Graph far more informative and useful than the Speed Meter. Plus at any given moment you can also left-click on the Networx icon in the task bar and get the "Current Transfer Rate" of the "UL" and "DL" speeds at that moment.
[Edit -- and their "Usage Report" should be able to assist you in tracking usage.]

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
I decided to try out netmeter from https://netmeter.en.softonic.com/ and trying to download it, it came back with some weird file type. I gave it a .exe extension and when I tried to run it, it said it couldn't run in this version of Windows. So, I'll probably stay away from this one.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
MarkRH I couldn't make sense of the download either but did end up at the "Store" for purchase. The program was something like $1.49 and I didn't want to pay for anything. I did find this at the "store" https://en.softonic.com/download/net-me ... load?ext=1 which was free. It is a small 2 line display that you can set on your screen, pick your colors and just works like I wanted.
This is probably better than anything I might have found that was browser limited as I believe this monitors the entire download/upload activity which is a more true vision of what I wanted.
v_v thanks for all the comments. I have Networx set up as you suggested too so I can evaluate a few different options. I did install an addon for Speedtest.net http://add0n.com/speed-test.html
Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
I downloaded the NetMeterEvo_2.1.0.zip file. (1,284,318 bytes)
unzip -l NetMeterEvo_2.1.0.zip
Virus Total for NetMeterEvo.exe
http://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/bffc ... /detection
Seems okay. I didn't test the executable. (64-bit only)
NetMeter 1.1.3 was the best version. It had alarms and traffic logs.
unzip -l NetMeterEvo_2.1.0.zip

Yeah, that netmeter file was actually a .ZIP file and not a .EXE.

Re: Addon to display upload/download speeds
Hi y'awll...
Sorry for all the trouble you're experiencing with the "new" netmeter.
I've got my/the original version on my mediafire site.
Link is here > https://www.mediafire.com/file/j62n7axe ... r.exe/file
This works on any Windows M/C. eg; 32 & 64 bit.
