Seems I can't find the email address of BenoitRen. :?

You can PM him.

Nice extension. Too bad it's Firefox-only, though. It does not work in Mozilla or SeaMonkey.

No automatic upgrade

Post by eeera »

When I upgraded to Firefox 2.0, the extension stopped working; it says "Not compatible with Firefox 2.0.0.2" in big threatening letters. Clicking on "Find Updates" in the Add-ons manager results in "No updates were found". However, installing 1.1 on top of the old Open in Browser 1.0 seems to work.

Any chance you could make "Find Updates" work ...?

For Firefox 3 beta, the extension is not installable. I found that by downloading the XPI package, and editing the file install.rdf inside that package, at least it would install from the edited XPI file, and it passes the obvious first test.

Changing the value inside em:maxVersion to 3.0.0.* seemed sufficient.

(I'd post a diff but this silly BBcode continues to want to outsmart me, whatever I try.)

@ Sylvain Pasche !

Since I´m running 'SeaMonkey 1.1.9' on 'XP Home SP2', I´ve got the following problem:

A few month ago, I installed the 'Open in browser'-extension, but decided to uninstall it again, by means of the 'Extension Uninstaller'.

I use the 'FlashGot'-extension, too.

Each time, I install a new version of 'FlashGot', the 'Open in browser' entry returns in my download dialog, which is very annoying.

Obviously, there must be some more entries somewhere in my installation, but I can´t find them.

I also tried to delete the JAR of 'Open in browser', as well as its entries in 'chrome.rdf' and 'installed-chromelist.txt' (all in the 'Program files' folder).
I also tried to delete the entries in the 'chrome.rdf' in my XP´s user profile.

All this works only until the installation of a new version of the 'FlashGot'-extension.

So, please, I´d like to know, how can I uninstall the 'Open in browser'-extension completely(!), to really get rid of it forever?

If possible, I don´t want to reinstall the whole SeaMonkey...

eera, did you have any luck with the ext subsequently? I was able to install it after modifying em:maxVersion, too, but I can't get it to display the pages. After clicking on a link, I get the dialog and can select "Open in Browser as Text." After clicking OK, however, I just get the same dialog again, over and over.

Now, this behavior is discussed above:
This doesn't work for me (1.5.0.6 on Linux). After selecting "Open in Browser as Text" I just get the same dialog back again. Any ideas why?

Actually, it does not work with some protocols, like file:/// or ftp:///. Is it broken for all http:/// URL's? I have sometimes seen some http:// URL's where it does not work, but I didn't understand what was the problem.

I didn't see any resolution to this issue, though. I don't know how widespread the malfunction is, but it happens for me at http://www.access.gpo.gov/bis/ear/txt/hints.txt. I'm using the retail release of Firefox 3.0, on Mac OSX 10.5.3.

It may also be noteworthy that, with my installation, when you select "Open in Browser as Text," the option to "Do this automatically for files like this from now on" becomes grayed out. (Or maybe this function is just not part of the extension to begin with.)

Thanks!

@Centauri39

removing the extension directory from your profile should uninstall it, but I'm not sure if this is the same story with Seamonkey.

@brachiator

I've fixed the issue that some .txt file can't be opened as text inside the browser, thanks for the report. This is available in version 1.3.

It is intentional that the checkbox "Do this automatically for files like this from now on" is grayed out, that's because remembering the action when "Open in browser as" is selected is not implemented.

Announce, new version for Firefox 3

I've updated the extension for Firefox 3 and published it on AMO: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8207

The new features include:
* Added "Page Source" viewing option (uses the view-source protocol)
* Hides mime type selection for non http pages: This means you won't be proposed to open page as XML if you have opened a file:/// URL. This is a limitation of Firefox that would be non trivial to fix.
* Support for the simple version of the unknown content type popup.
* French translation
* fixed bug found by brachiator: some text files can't be opened in browser.
* Code cleanup and refactoring for Firefox 3.

You can add additional mime types to the list by creating a pref named extensions.openinbrowser.additional_mimes in about:config with the list of additional types separated by a "|". For instance, "application/pdf|audio/ogg-vorbis". Yeah, Having a UI for this would be better.

You can review it on the addons.mozilla.org page, I'll ask for nomination after I've got some feedback.

Thanks

I am not able to install it. It complains about a wrong file hash. What is going wrong, and is there some other way to install it, apart from AMO?

Error message:

Firefox kon het bestand op

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... 1.3-fx.xpi

niet installeren omdat: Ongeldige bestandshash (mogelijke downloadcorruptie)
-261

I managed to install it finally by going to the *Thunderbird* plugin site, downloading it and opening that file with FF. It was impossible to download the file from the FF plugin site, since it stores a link to the login site.

hamaryns,

Do you have third-party cookies disabled? If so, enable them please, and it will work. That problem is https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=437174.

I've been looking for this functionality for SO long; your extension is awesome; thank you.

There's one improvement that could be made: right now, Open in Browser forgets which tab actually requested the file.

An example: I'm on a web page that has a link to a file that is served with a mime type that sucks. Instead of just clicking on the link, I right click on it and select Open Link in New Tab. The new tab opens and spins for a second. The download dialog pops up, and I select Open in Browser (as Text). The file's contents are then displayed in the original tab where I was still viewing the webpage, and the new tab I opened to view the file in is empty.

It'd be nice if the file were displayed in the tab I opened for it, instead of in the tab with the original webpage.

That's all. Thanks again!

I've uploaded a new version that should fix that. It's not reviewed yet, but you can get it there: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... sions/8207

Very nice extension, thanks.

I've recently come across the fact that Thunderbird has a similar problem - sometimes the sender doesn't specify the correct mimetype of an attachment, so the user is just prompted to save the file (no "open with"-dialogue, either).
Do you think this extension could be made to work with Thunderbird as well, given that it shares lot of code with Firefox, and can i.e. display text and html similar to Firefox? This would be rather useful for a lot of "text-only" attachments like logfiles...

Cheers
