So I don't know if that makes sense, but after a lot of testing I've come to the conclusion that it happens once you remove the search bar from the interface.

So new steps to reproduce:
Use customize to remove the search bar from the interface and restart -> Multiple things are broken in the browser, as described.

Can anybody confirm?

Thanks for confirming. Unfortunately I don't have time to do a bisection now, but I guess that should be enough to find the root cause.

Would be interesting to see if the issues are fixed if the search bar is added to the UI again. Is there even a way to do this without the broken customize?

yes. I had already re-downloaded yesterday's Nightly. From that, re-add the Search bar, then close Nightly, install today's nightly and run it. I only (apparently, for now) lost two pinned tabs I had

Easiest way to recover is to set browser.search.widget.inNavBar = true and restart.

Nightly 27-06-17 and 28-06-17 didn't start automatically after Help - About Nightly - Restart to apply updates, I had to manually launch them using the shortcut. Is that a bug?
Sorry for my poor English.

latest hourly tinderbox build 20170628072943 cc903e3f61894e60c3b0efaf05e9a446d1d85888 the 'new tab' that shows your visited sites has been drastically reduced in size, only show 12 sites and seemingly losing my 'pinned' tabs.

What the pref to change to get more tiles ?

EDIT: browser.newtabpage.rows default seems to now be '2', changed it back to '3' I had before all is well except for the tiny size of tiles. Zooming seems to enlarge them OK.
