You still have the "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" preference.

Always been my setting.

IMO it is a lot better now. There is still a minor difference in darkness but not as bad as before.

They pushed Nightly to clang-cl. I thought I was losing my mind. Things definitely got snappier.

Now you have the option to allow autoplay of videos per website. Been waiting for this forever.

Same here. I even had a not so good addon to try and block autoplay.

I like the new block autoplay feature, but autoplay has bothered me a lot less since I installed the Auto Mute extension. Each tab is created muted avoiding the audio distraction of videos.

Some videos still autoplay at msn.com although the sound is muted. Filed bug 1477421 – Some videos autoplay at msn.com

I like that you can disable autoplay per site now but the popup is just as annoying as the autoplaying video itself on the sites you don't want autoplaying videos and annoying having to configure for every subdomain for the sites you want it.

I just tried this on Linux and the tab bar still worked as expected. It could be OS related or there's some additional factor involved.

This isn't something I would expect an extension to cause, but have you tried in Safe Mode or with a new profile?

Have you looked in Options > Privacy & Security > Notifications and changed the setting for ""For websites that autoplay sound" from "Always Ask" to "Block Autoplay"?

I don't want to block autoplay, I want the option to block it for some sites and leave on for others but without the constant nagging.
