Re: Direct2D & DirectWrite HW Acceleration For Minefield - Info
Thanks a lot for posting this. I've been following discussion on the Trunk threads, and I never saw any mention that it doesn't work on XP. Now that I know why it didn't make any difference, I've cleaned those pointless settings out of about:config .
Win 10 Pro x64, AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 6 core, 3900 MHz (4450 Turbo), AMD Radeon Vega (integrated graphics). 16GB DDR4-3200, Firefox 124.0.1, Developer Edition 125.0b5, Nightly 126.0a1.

Re: Direct2D & DirectWrite HW Acceleration For Minefield - Info
It is sometimes necessary to restart FF twice in row when something has caused d2d/dw to suddenly stop functioning. I've had this happen when install/uninstalling addons, changing something in Prefs or in Options, and even changing a Stylish style.

Is there documentation on the mozilla.widget.render-mode setting?
What do the integers 1 to 5 enable (and possibly 7, 8, 9, etc)?

Both 32-bit and 64-bit version?

It doesn't matter. It works in both. Just as long as its Windows 7 or Vista SP2 with the updates.

Thanks, I needed a laugh.
Seriously though, how doe that statement even make sense? The open source drivers are not nearly as bad as you seem to think (well, maybe Nouveau, but there are good reasons for that, and it's not like it isn't improving), and the closed drivers, while not the fastest due to architecture issues, are basically fine (well, aside from the "closed" thing). All in all, 3d being active is pretty common on desktop Linux (for games and/or Compiz). And I assure you that that 3d support does not come with d3d, nor with Glide. In fact it comes with - wait for it - OpenGL. Mesa fully supports OpenGL 2.1, and work is started on 3.x

Can we keep on-topic with DirectWrite and D2D, take the OpenGL stuff to its own thread, it has no relevance to DW/D2D

This is probably due to GPU frequency scaling. Most GPUs fall to a low clock cycle during periods on inactivity, so if you haven't scrolled a webpage for a while it will take sometime for the GPU to switch to a higher frequency to deal with the extra load.

Windows Xp is not compatible with DirectX10. Direct2D and DirectWrite needs that infrastructure to run.

Re: Direct2D & DirectWrite HW Acceleration For Minefield - Info
Is there a problem with all the Intel chipsets? I'm using a 965 chipset, but it seems D2D doesn't work (although Aero works fine).
Edit: Hm, I'm sure it wasn't working yesterday, but now it's working. I saw it just after I posted this message (fonts are bolder).
Edit2: Hm, it seems D2D is switching off randomly. After a restart it seems to work again for a while. Haven't found out the cause yet.

With DW & D2D enabled, using Ctrl+tab to switch between tabs, and pressing ctrl+tab to switch between tabs results in all the tabs being highlighted if you tab through enough times
known bug ?
