Since a couple of days, Firefox has been acting up with high cpu usage and general sluggishness. Opening a new tab or a context menu makes the cpu use spike. Tried turning off Microsoft security essentials 2 and starting Firefox in safe mode, but no change. Any ideas?

Did you try a new clean profile? Unfortunately one of the "joys" of testing bleeding edge software is that things can and do go wrong. If the new profile does not work then come back and we will try something else. Not all of us have the patience of a Mayfly

Also try disabling hardware acceleration in Options -> Advanced ->General -> Browsing
If that works, type about:support into the location bar and tell us what it says in the Graphics section.
