Don't know if this is because of SSE or -O2/-O3. A third build would be useful. :)

I have uploaded another non-SSE version (MozillaFirebird-i686-pc-linux-gnu323-nosse.2003-08-24.tar.bz2).

This one uses -O3. If this works for you, then the culprit is most probably the SSE optimization. If you could take the time to test it, I'd much appreciate it.

This one worked fine.

Just to make sure, I tested your latest SSE/O3 build MozillaFirebird-i686-pc-linux-gnu323.2003-08-23.tar.bz2 and this one shows the glitches (simply scrolling http://forums.mozillazine.org/ with mousewheel)

Wow, you're the man!!! I truly appreciate your taking time to test my build. So the most likely culprit is the SSE optimization. From now on, I will produce two builds -- one with SSE opt. and one without.
