Then we need this baseline to be superfast then.

Works for me... but I don't really understand what else people are expecting. Firefox opens up to a webpage just as fast as the Windows Calculator for me, and somewhat faster than Notepad. Then again I run in Windows Classic mode where everything is faster and uses fewer resources anyway.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

It also causes tearing and is no longer present.

He's referring to the last sentence in your quoted post.

Well obviously. It's still not a sentence in English that makes any sense.

I think he's referring to Windows Classic, claiming that having it selected causes tearing, though I personally never experienced that. Also, the claim "is no longer present" probably refers to Windows 8, biggest blunder of the year 2012.

Yeah, never seen "tearing" either... but then I disable that "smooth scrolling" nonsense as well. Windows 8 = Vista. It's going to be a LONG time before people abandon Win 7 for that mess. Still doesn't change the fact that when you disable the animations and sparklies and nonsense that Firefox is blazing fast. The UX team have swallowed the OSX pill in believing that forcing users to wait for goofy cartoony animations makes things seem "fast" but I'll stand by my assertion that nothing is faster than instantaneous.

I keep hearing hatred for windows 8 on every forum - I've used it since RTM and, although I use classicshell to get the start menu back, and don't use Metro, I find it a blast - much more efficient on system resources then 7 was.

If they gave the option to get the desktop back I'm sure people would like it.

The best solution in my opinion? Let DWM enabled. Disable in "Performance Options" the animations ( for instance when max/min windows ), disable Transparent Glass ( although I have the Windows 8 Skin on Windows 7 because the default is ugly without transparency ), optionally the cursor's shadow ( like in Win8 ) and there you have the best combination... Fast and responsive with HWA enabled on everything.

Don't forget the Windows 7 Pre-release platform update.

By the way, I just noticed Patrick is on XP.

@Grantius, I was using Win8 even earlier than RTM until ~1 week ago. I did a clean installation of Win7, I disabled everything I don't need ( services/features ), I got all updates along with the important D2D/D3D/Directwrite ones, and believe me, nothing better! I feel much better. Windows 7 is not like XP when Vista came up. You know, Win8 is more like a Service Pack for Win7. My PC is not a tablet, neither Microsoft's market place with its ads and all. I also like Start Menu.

What I truly like on Win8, is the desktop UI. But... Here you go: http://mare-m.deviantart.com/art/Window ... -318932206
This guy did amazing job. The original Win8 Theme on Win7 with small tweaks to fit perfectly.

I have both XP and a 7 machine. I recommend you do some testing... in my experiments disabling Aero transparency had virtually zero impact on performance or resources, although I already had HWA disabled so that may be a factor. Switching to Classic had a PROFOUND effect.

Do you have a discrete GPU? I mean, at least a semi-decent one... It's well known DWM and Themes impact the performance negatively, but also do a good job in many fields. I'm not trying to get the most perf. I'm just trying to find a solution that includes everything.

As the animations hurt Firefox's perf a lot, the same applies on Windows, just not in such a large scale, of course.

This thing doesn't have a "gpu". It's got a video card. :P So I disable that buggy HWA junk, put it in Classic and go about my day.

Not all machines have video cards, but those that do also have a GPU.
There are machines without a video card but those might still have a GPU.
Also, enabling classic mode in Windows 7 introduces problems in several programs including tearing in MPC-HC (with several different video renderers including madVR).
