XBL/XUL/XPCOM based addons has been marked for depreciation

Post by Omega X »

Duck and cover!

XBL/XUL/XPCOM addons have been announced as depreciated.
https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2015/08 ... x-add-ons/

More info and fallout:

The replacement is called "WebExtensions" and is homogenized with Chrome and Opera addons.

What happens to JetPack? No clue at the moment.

Update:

It was inevitable and we all saw it coming, despite the denials from Mozilla. I'm slightly surprised it is here so quickly. Mozilla seems to have a lot on its plate right now with signing and e10s, but I guess becoming another dumbed-down vanilla product is very important to them.

The timing is really bad. Maybe freezing e10 back then was a bad idea. Freezing e10 to put resources elsewhere allowed for shorter term technical gains, but Firefox was in a much stronger position to weather the upheaval and potential developer exodus with the introduction of e10. Firefox marketshare is just so much weaker than it was just less than a 2 years ago. It was declining, but the last year and half maybe, it seems it was taking a noise dive.

Which tells you those users that "dived" didnt care about extensions... or at least didnt care about extensions that actually did something... As long as they can access 'social media', which they can do on a wrist watch they are good to go....

In the traditional sense, yes. It definitely is. What comes next is anyone's guess.

I mean, If it wasn't for Tab Overflow in Firefox I would have changed to Chrome / Opera long time ago.

But Good thing Firefox is now Chrome like with Different Rendering Engine below. May be one day they could abstract the Top UI have use both Blink and Servo. Many Chinese browsers has been doing Two / Three Rendering Engine anyway.

May be in the consumer/personal world, but in the corporate world (Firefox) Desktop Browser is still used. I work for the IT Support Division of a major US supermarket chain and most of us are using Firefox to access the Intranet, Internet as well as our in house web based apps (such as inventory system).

Firefox use on the desktop by Enterprise users is a 'spit in the ocean' ... One estimate shows IE is currently 47% and falling Chrome is 43% and climbing. Safari and Firefox pick up the crumbs. And Mobile devices will also become a huge factor in the future..
