FlyWeb is now in Nightly

Post by DJ-Leith »

Only noticed this today (2016-06-13).
I've not seen this discussed at mozillaZine but I may have missed it.

You can 'see that is installed', as a 'not very obvious Extension', in about:support

It is not visible in about:addons (in any of the Tabs there).

Reading:

https://wiki.mozilla.org/FlyWeb

Notes on FlyWeb Security
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eqL ... fBMBM/edit
(requires JavaScript - I use NoScript [e10s off], link from the wiki)

Firefox 50.0a1 (2016-06-13), Windows 7, Win 64 bit version.

From about:support

Code: Select all

Name Firefox
Version 50.0a1
Build ID 20160613030258

FlyWeb is another one of the system installed extensions like Hello, and Pocket, etc and can not be permanently removed... pref is dom.flyweb.enabled... currently default set to False

system installed extensions do not appear in user profiles

Considering info from Mozilla's Wiki it another attempt of mozilla to create some kind of "ecosystem". FlyWeb should allow Firefox to communicate with remote devices and services:
to discover and connect devices together,
enable bi-directional communication,
allow arbitrary, but secure code execution on each side,
and require knowledge of as few details of a device's peers as possible.

One example in mind is something like sending video to Chromecast (they never managed to implement this on desktop). In other word its absolutely unclear that it can do without compatible devices available.

FWIW.. All those 'hidden extensions' can be disabled with CCleaner. There is an feature to display Fx addons, and plugins. The hidden extensions are displayed there.

The actual addons are in the Fx program folder under browser/features

This seems different than Hello and Pocket. Its a framework for IoT device communication.

These guys really never get tired of opening the proverbial can of worms:
discover and connect devices together,
enable bi-directional communication,
allow arbitrary, but secure code execution on each side
This "internet of things" thing really has them going over their heads: it's a browser, not an embedded OS.
