The subject pretty well says it; in 53, YouTube briefly displays some obscure error message and then falls back to Flash. In 52, HTML5 works fine.
In 53, in safe mode, HTML5 works, but then I lose all my customizations.
I have both installed in Program Files; both use the same profile, so nothing else is different.
In a new profile with no extensions, 53 won't work. However curiously, in safe mode, it does work even though there is no Chrome and no extensions to disable.
It seems to me that something has broken in 53. Any thoughts
HTML5 won't work in 53.0a1, but will in 52.0a1

Bug 1318083 - [Nightly] GPU video decoding prevents YouTube from playing HTML5 videos
It works for me if I disable only GPU video decoding. No need to disable hardware acceleration nor GPU process.

OK Setting media.gpu-process-decoder to 'false' fixed 53 on the HP-Envy desktop and ASUS laptop. However, the Samsung laptop is content to leave it 'true'
Thanks for the help!

k9, I splitted your post off as a new thread at http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... &t=3026203 as this thread was about the then 52.0a1 and 53.0a1 test builds
