WinXP Update Push

Post by L.A.R. Grizzly »

Has Mozilla stopped pushing updates on WinXP for FX and TB through the internal updaters? I tried to update my WinXP laptop today and it said that both were "up to date". I downloaded the current builds and installed them without any problems (FX 52.0.2, TB 45.8.0). Just curious. Thanks.

Support for Windows XP, Vista, and server 2003 has been dropped in Firefox 53.0 and later however they can use Firefox 52.0 ESR for security and allowed stability updates.

https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Install- ... ta-p/31270
Bug#1319164 Message XP/Vista users to inform them that support/security updates have ended (2018 Q1)

The person who filed above bug made a earlier vague comment (that the article is going by) about support ending in Sept 2017 with nothing to go on.

Firefox 52.8.0 ESR will be out when Firefox 60.0 is released as the ESR channel generally gets eight updates and not four.

It would be silly to drop support for WinXP/Vista as of 52.5.0esr, 52.6.0esr, 52.7.0esr, and 52.8.0esr as Fx 52 ESR is only for security and allowed stability fixes.

Since FX 52 and TB 45 are still viable on WinXP, why did both of them claim to be "up to date"?

Also, what was the last .esr that didn't require SSE2 supported CPUs?

In SeaMonkey, SeaMonkey 2.46 requires CPU with SSE2 support, but then we skipped some releases.
In any case, at the latest it would have been FF 49. Check the FF release notes, should tell, I imagine.

After version 48, SSE2 CPU extensions are going to be required on Windows

So... 49.
Fire 750, bring back 250.

From what I can ascertain, 45.9.0esr should be the last of the non-SSE2 builds. It will come out on the 18th. I'll give it a try, if it doesn't install, I'll back up until I find the last one that does.

Well as FF >= 49 requires SSE2, then FF 48 or older (including 45.x ESR's) will not.

Firefox 52.0.2 is the latest version of Firefox whether on Release or ESR channel.

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/

Firefox 49.0 and later (on Windows) dropped support for CPU's that did not support SSE2 or better so Firefox 45 ESR is the last ESR branch to still run on CPU's that does not support SSE2. The current is 45.8.0esr with 45.9.0esr (out at same time as Fx 53.0 Release) is likely to be the last. https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/49.0/releasenotes/

That's what I'm gathering. Any idea why 52.0 says it up to date (on WinXP) when there's 52.0.2 as the latest version? I'm still wondering why my laptop (which is SSE2 compliant) wouldn't update through the internal updater. I had to download the installer to get the latest version. TB did the same thing.

Most likely there was or still is a server issue when you try to update. In my tests Firefox 51 gets updated to Firefox 52ESR and later to 52.0.1ESR and 52.0.2ESR on Windows XP (in VirtualBox).

Quite possible. It would be nice to have FX and TB say "Could not connect to server." instead of "Up to Date". :-k

It's not a server issue, it is a server rule since 52.0 version

Well...that 'splains it! The devs have cut us off a little too soon (since v52.x.x is still viable). Sneaky! #-o

I just changed it over to 52.0.2esr. On the 18th, it should update to 52.1.0esr. We'll see...
