FF Quantum version 60

Post by greyowl2 »

I am using Linux FF Quantum version 59. It has a known issue of no sound. I have read that the problem will be fix in version 60.

I am just wondering how soon it is expected that version 60 will be available.

Thanks for the help.

Which Linux OS are you running?
I've had no issue with sound with 59.0.2 in Ubuntu or Linux Mint.
It may be you need one of the media packages or a configuration file needs to be adjusted.
Doesn't matter what you say, it's wrong for a toaster to walk around the house and talk to you

I'm running antiX. I had no sound so I read up on it and found that you have to install pulseaudio for sound with v. 59. I did this and it worked but later seemed to mess up my sound system so I removed it. The source said the problem with 59 would be corrected with 60.

So you haven't hand any problems. Maybe, pulseaudio is included in ubuntu and mint. AntiX is rather bare bones.

I will see if I can find the reference to this problem.

I found the references:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/no ... x-59-linux

Looks like the issue is how to keep pulseaudio running so that it is available for FF.

So, I will still need pulseaudio with FF 60, but they will function better together.

Under certain circumstances with PulseAudio yes.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/no ... x-59-linux

ALSA support was dropped starting Firefox 52.0 and later. Some Linux distros may have delayed this change to PulseAudio with their own third-party Firefox packages to use ALSA until more recently.

You could compile Firefox yourself with --disable-pulseaudio --enable-alsa

Keep in mind that if you do this you will not get updates from Mozilla as it will be a third-party build.

(Released back on March 7, 2017)
On Linux, Firefox now requires PulseAudio to play sound and no longer plays sound directly with ALSA.

@ James

Thank you for the very thorough information. It is helpful.

Looks like it is best to just use pulseaudio.

@ mightyglydd

This seems like a hornet's nest. I might just avoid FF 60 and stick with FF 52 ESR

Unfortunately, the next major ESR is 60, which goes into testing and certification on May 9, 2018, and becomes the official ESR release on August 21, 2018. (Extended Support Release.) So those involved with the hornet's nest may get stung. ](*,)
