Apples and oranges. Gpedit is for Windows not Fx. GP will not help at all with Fx updates.
GPEdit is for whatever software that lets you configure its policies. That includes both Chrome and Firefox.

According to the readme, disabling update via group policy is ESR-only?
Bug 1460082 changed it.

Anyone else think Nightly 'testers' should still have an opt-out of the update in the event of something being busted.

How do you suggest the opt-out would work? Mozilla stops updates if they know of a big problem. I'm not sure how I would know a problem would affect me unless I try it.

For those that do test and find out after downloading its broken most of us back up to previous Nightly. With the current set up we would be offered the bad build until who knows when....

Unless I'm misunderstanding something here, nothing is forcing an update. They just removed the option to "never check for updates". 7-18-2018 version of Nightly still has "check for updates but let you choose to install them".
