It'll get better eventually, I'm hoping Google starts doing AV1 encodes for popular videos soon, even if it's just for 360p and 480p.

There's more than just those in the playlist. Many music videos got AV1 encodes.

I've been testing it since it came out, haven't seen any AV1 encodes on videos outside the playlist but then again I haven't been watching music videos.

EDIT: Just went through quite a lot of music videos, it looks like pretty much only those with 100s of millions of views got AV1 encodes.

EDIT: Just went through quite a lot of music videos, it looks like pretty much only those with 100s of millions of views got AV1 encodes.

The encoder is still slow, so they're intentionally choosing consistently active videos over those that lose popularity quickly. I don't know how many machines they got crunching away but deep dives into YouTube every once in a while results in new AV1 encodes that weren't there before.
