Error is there in nightly & nightly with add-ons disabled.
All works fine in stable.

So you specify your download location as c:\folder in Options? Have you tried changing it to a folder not in the root to see if that works?
Yes, it works if I try to download any file, as long as I don't point it to C:\ in which case I always get some error and no download is done.

This is likely due to process sandboxing. If you point the download location to anywhere in your user profile or below it (like %UserProfile%\Downloads or %UserProfile%\Desktop, where %UserProfile% expands to something like C:\Users\MyUsername) it'll work, but the process won't have the privileges required to place files anywhere outside there. You could experiment by setting security.sandbox.content.level in about:config to a lower value (0 disables it entirely).

Did anything related to this change in the recent days, since I don't remember having such problems like a week ago (or perhaps 14 days) ?
BTW, In Settings/Downloads, I have it set to "Always ask you where to save files" since as long as I remember.

I don't think Windows will allow downloads to C:\ I just tried and got the permissions denied contact your Admin. At least in Win10 x64. I'm betting Win7 is the same.

I don't know, I don't think it's that recent. I remember running into the same issue months ago. Maybe something changed for Windows 7 more recently? It's possible that some of the APIs they use on Windows 10 don't exist there.

Well, it all just works fine with FF stable in Win7, and up until a (few) week(s) ago also with FF nightly.
