They probably added about:blank as a protected page where add-ons will not work. Same as all the other about pages.

Using this Foxygesture method seems to "work"
The downside is, the gesture must be triggered from "loaded" page first. Plus the address bar is not automatically focused after opening "about:blank" tab via gesture. Sigh.

Previously, I just let those 3 empty and a simple gesture opening new tab will open up a new blank tab with address bar being focused. Not to mention gesture works right away.
