Looks like they're suggesting JRE 5 (also known as 1.5.0_10) for users, but JRE 6 for developers who get the Development Kit (SDK).

The Firefox/Java thing, plugin or JRE, whatever, is more troublesome than it used to be. I had to close Firefox and restart it to get back and post this message. At least it has an auto updater now.

java.com is always behind the times.

JRE 6 is noticeably faster at loading (and possibly running) and works with everything I've thrown at it.

Your obviously pretty new to the world of comping.. An i686 linux binary is not gonna run on a sparc or ppc for that matter ... so we are stuck waiting on the source. Now maybe you understand a little about different computing archs.

The source will be available tomorrow (Pacific US time) - it was not out with the binaries due to an oversight, nothing malicious.

Also unless I am mistaken it is possible to checkout the exact source used to compile the official firefox 2.0.0.1 binaries from cvs using the release tag for firefox 2.0.0.1

Eeek... please, folks, consider exercising some restraint when it comes to downloading what claims to be an unreleased JRE from gomgo.biz or any other unofficial source. A quick Google will show that this file has not been released by Sun (as of Dec 20 14:45 UTC), whereas jre-6-windows-i586.exe has. Even if they are sometimes a little slow to promote the newest version to their downloads page, you're much better off getting the file from Sun, barring some terrible must-have-the-newest-Java-to-save-my-puppy emergency.

You can and should. Assuming you're running Windows, use the "Add/Remove Programs" dialog to uninstall old JREs, and double-check under "C:\Program Files\Java" just to be sure. (Sun has uninstallation instructions at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010800.xml.)

Java doesn't uninstall older JRE versions when you install a new one. This is by design, so that users can keep multiple versions installed and run picky code with the version of their choice. But older versions generally also have unpatched security flaws. Web-based applets used to be able to specifically request an older flawed version, though that's supposedly fixed. (http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-102557-1.) Still, given this sort of history, it's safest to uninstall all but the most up-to-date JRE, since you'll probably never need the older versions.

(And since we're getting paranoid -- use NoScript to block Java applets from untrusted sites. http://www.noscript.net.)

Themers - add this to your menupopup, popup stuff in popup.css
