Excellent sleuthing.

(I suspected it was related to the way files are handed off to the Windows shell: if you don't change the extension to one associated with the user's selected application, then you will not get the application you requested -- you will get the default application for that file extension.)

Thank you, this lead me to another blog post which describes my problem exactly.

I see there's nothing I can do about it in firefox without breaking it in IE at the same time.
