Standards Organisation with non-standard web site
ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) has recently made a decision to restrict it's portal access to IE 5+ and Netscape 6+ users. As from the end of March they will be blocking Mozilla, Opera and all other browsers. At present they direct these users to the "Portal Lite" version of the web site, which is to be discontinued.
They tell me this is because 96% of their users use those two browsers and that it is "too difficult and costly" to implement a site that works for all browsers. And, yes, they are blocking Mozilla even though they allow Netscape 6+. I queried them on this, and got the standard robot reply as above.
And this is *the* European Standards Organisation for telecommunications!!!!
You can take a look at http://portal.etsi.org/

I just simply don't understand it. I would understand if they didn't have time to make Opera or Netscape 4 version of their website. But if they have done a Gecko-compliant version, why restrict to Netscape?
Of course, after spoofing your UA to Netscape 6.2 (e.g. via PrefBar) the site works just fine...
Somebody should tell them that Phoenix, Mozilla, Chimera, Galeon, Skipstone, Epiphany etc. WILL work with their site just fine, if only they changed their browser detection scripts...
e-Standardization. ROTFL.

Spoofing or masquarading the UA is one option, and it does work I checked and told them the results, but IMHO it's a really bad idea because it just propagates the myth that everyone uses IE or Netscape.
Personally I prefer to have the UA report its proper identity. Unless the web masters see their statistics telling them that there are other users out there, many will simply continue being lazy and push us ever further down the IE only route.

Going to their "Accessibility for All" page in a non-frame-capable browser (or one configured to disable frames, as I think you can set Opera), you get:
This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them.
Not accessible to quite *all*, I guess.

I've got another reply from ETSI:
Thank you for your comments.
Your request has been taken into consideration and is being dealt with.
The ETSI portal that holds advanced functionality is now accessible
to other browser types compatible with Microsoft Internet
Explorer 5+ or Netscape 6+ browsers/engines.
