Better Advertisement Policy

Post by bijugc »

<b>Better Advertisement Policy</b>

Now with Mozilla (and other browsers) popup blocking and image blocking features users can have much control over Advertisements. User can achieve even more control over Advertisement and the page layout/appearances by modifying userContent.css (see topic <a href="http://www.mozillazine.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8064">userContent.css</a>)

But banning Advertisement completely will affect revenue of the websites and hence may be even closing it down. Which may not be desirable even for Mozilla community. Websites may start thinking of "Better Advertisement Policy", like AOL stopped accepting any more new popup ad contacts.

So now is the time for us to discus what kind of advertisements is acceptable for us. That way we will be able give a better guidance to the websites. If we notice somebody violate our guidelines we should politely inform them about our policy.

We may design an Ad policy logo so that if used, visitors on any webpage can be linked to our ad policy/ guidelines page.

Overall, we, the thinking people, want to avoid ads. Currently, by hiding as a fraction of the people who run de-adifying programs or exotic browsers of one sort or another, we are not a target of the adman. Or, rather, we are, but we are able to smother it. Anticipating their next move or telling them what we will put up with is not an option.

I don't want any of it. None are acceptable. Some are not acceptable. It's like treading water.

Thanks for your comments. I also dont like ads or anything that limit my freedom
But if we have zero tolerance attitude how do we make them to create standard pages. Always they will say 95% of our visitors have IE. Visitors are choosing IE because their non standard pages are only best viewable in IE.

They will care us only if we care them.

See the case of Indian language sites very few are viewable in Mozilla. Even if it is view able in Mozilla we have to download separate font for each site. They dont care as IE has dynamic fonts and works fine with their site.

I started thinking about "Better Advertisement Policy" after I had problems with Indian sites.

@bugjuice

I am all for multilingualism in Mozilla. I use it. I find it amazing. I never use any Indian sites, sorry. I tried some of those and some look like they worked with Unicode and some wouldn't work even if I picked Hindi. What language are they?

Some, like:
http://www.bulbulbooks.com/
worked after I choose View/Character Coding/More/MidEast/ArabicIBM864

Some, like:
http://www.deshabhimani.com/
worked after I choose View/Character Coding/More/MidEast/Arabic1256

To make them work, just poke at that setting. It has nothing to do with ads.

Hindi, is only one of the language in india. Other languages are Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Oria, Marati, Bengala, ......... there are more than 20 states in india. Language was the base, when they divided India in to different States. Each language have different scripts. There are 18 or more national languages in India. (U can count at least 18 diffenet languages in a indian currency note.) As per Mahatma Gandhi and other old leaders, these languages were supposed to merge into a single language. But it never happend. Other than these national languages we have many languages (may be 500, with more than 2000 dialect), many dont have any ISO code for encoding.

So this situation is very different from europe, as europian languages have same latin script. Other issue languages like Malayalam has more than 50 letters in alpabet. (Advantage of 50+ letters is no way a single word can be pronounced in different ways. We get different spelling when we change accent).

Differnce in en-us, en-uk, en-... are only like Tamil spoken in nothern city Madras, and Tamil spoken in southern city Madura. (ie, is the diffence in slang) But this wont have much issue, as when we write we avoid slang. (Like in english they use Queens english.)

We had soultions for language/font issue, if they use a standard font like http://fsf.org.in/software/software.html#akruti

Downloading font for every site, selecting Character Coding, who will do that when IE do it for them

Role of ADVERTISEMENT - most for these sites are funded by Advertisement

So why sites want to correct issues (Language, ActiveX controls, JavaScript etxc.) for a browser which can block their popups
