52.9.1 (32-bit)
I double click an email. It opens in a new tab. However, the back and forth arrows to move previous/next messages are always grey. I do not know when they last worked.
Thoughts?

Are you using the previous/next or the previous unread/next unread buttons? The latter have the same text for the icon (which is confusing), but use a icon with two solid black arrows.

As I hover over them they say for BACK, "go back one message, and FORWARD, "go forward one message."
I went into CUSTOMIZE, and saw the buttons you referring to, and single ones (for all rather unread only). I tried those and they work as I have been looking to do. And the interesting thing, those two buttons I originally wrote about then become active when the ones you had me add get added. When I removed them, to test, then the BACK/FORWARD went grey again.
So, I am sticking with the arrows and removed the others and things are making a happier world for the moment.
