Thunderbird Memory Usage
One of my prime reasons for moving from Mozilla's mailer to Thunderbird was hopes that I could get memory (and maybe even CPU) usage down. Now I'll admit, I put the thing through abusive loads that probably no mail client should ever see (I've got over 5.5 Gig of mail...), but I was hoping to get memory usage down around 50MB instead of around 120-180MB where it likes to hang. Memory usage so far seems about the same between the two. Maybe a bit lighter in Thunderbird, but not much. A large bulk of my mail is only occasionally accessed, but is still very much needed. I have noticed memory usage can move around quite a bit in the program, but I'm not quite sure of what exactly triggers memory usage in Thunderbird (or Mozilla/Netscape either for that matter). Any technical info here would be appreciated as well as possible solutions to the problem (short of removing the mail - dealing with 180MB of memory usage is preferable to having to stand on my head every time I want access to something in the archives). I wouldn't mind if memory usage only spiked when I was digging through the old stuff, the main irritant is when I've just got it running in the background and I'm trying to do other things (I'm kind of bad about having 20 - 30 windows open at the same time too... I've only got 10 right now, but I'm making up for it with 11 tabs open in firefox. Anyway, with that many windows, you can understand why I care about the memory usage.) TIA.

Based on other threads on this subject Thunderbird seems to use 20Mb to 30MB on most machines. My first suspicion would be that you've got a memory leak due to running a nightly build (rather than a release) or from an extension or theme you installed.
>I'm kind of bad about having 20 - 30 windows open at the same time too.
I have thunderbird configured to always reuse an existing window when opening one. I remember mozilla/firefox was notorious for memory leaks if you used any of the tab extensions and had more than a few tabs open , until recently. Perhaps you're running into the same type of thing due to your 30 windows.

I don't think it's a memory leak. With Mozilla I could generate the behavior just by launching the mailer and digging through my mail (and that held true for the most recent version as well - I just switched yesterday). Thunderbird seems to be doing the same thing. The memory usage doesn't consistantly climb like you would expect with a memory leak, and at various times when I'm using it will actually drop down a fair bit. I'm just unsure as to what does and doesn't trigger memory usage (I imagine it's got a relation to number of folders, size of those folders, where they're located, and which ones I'm currently accessing in some fashion). What I'm hoping for is one of the developers here to pipe up with some technical info on memory usage, and if someone started throwing around ideas about what might be done to cut memory usage currently or maybe even ideas for reducing it in future builds. (Then again maybe I'm in the wrong thread for that too, but this doesn't exactly qualify as a bug or such and I'm not sure where the developers might actually hang out....)

TB memory usage
I too find that Thunderbird's memory constantly climbs even after I minimize it. (I'm using TB 0.9 with various extensions under Win XP Pro, SP2.) Interestingly, though, this does NOT happen with Firefox (1.0); is there some difference between the way these programs manage their memory?

Re: Thunderbird Memory Usage
Hello all,
I disabled all add-ons and reset toolbars & controls and this fixed the memory problem in my side.
Here is the steps I followed:
1- Open Thunderbird
2- Help -> Restart with add-ons disabled
3-
* Check the box "Disable all add-ons"
* Check the box "Reset toolbars and controls"
4- Make changes and restart.
Regards,
Abdo
