Where is Thunderbird 24.7?

Post by Pete Boyd »

Where is Thunderbird 24.7 please?

These pages mention its existence:
https://www.mozilla.org/security/known- ... rbird.html
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbi ... easenotes/

But there is no mention of it on the dowload page:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all.html

Thanks

aiui, 24.7 is for ESR users.

Stock TB 24.6.0 users currently do not have a newer automatic update. Eventually it will, when TB31 is deemed 100% solid. Until then, if you've got itchy pants and can't wai, do help | about | update to get version 31.

All my clients are on 24.6. I want to deploy 24.7 to all my clients as a drop-in replacement until I am ready to deploy 31. I do not use automatic update, or each Thunderbird's Help -> About -> Check For Updates, I deploy updates centrally. I expected 24.7 to be released already as so many Mozilla web pages speak of its existence. It isn't normal for Mozilla to wait until 31 proves itself before releasing 24.7, especially as they already mention that it has been released, so I do not know what you are talking of when you say that.

Expecting that - due to the lack of a dedicated ESR branch - 24.6.0 receives an update to 24.7.0 on the release channel (to be moved to 31.2.0 with those branches running in parallel for two cycles), I too was surprised to see it updating straight to 31.0 without even as much as a notice.

Nevertheless, 24.7.0 builds were generated and can be downloaded from https://download.mozilla.org/?product=thunderbird-24.7.0&os=win&lang=en-US (here the en-US Windows version, modify the arguments as desired).

Thank you. I had tried doing that but with '24.7' in the URL rather than '24.7.0'.

Yeah, with the 24.x branch they introduced the ".0" with the major updates.
You are welcome.

BTW: I'll move this to Thunderbird General as it's not related to pre-release builds.

Well, things change. And things changed because the changes done in TB24 for ESR necessicated those changes.

In other words don't expect what happened in TB17, and how it updated to TB24 to be the same for TB24 updating to whatever, including TB31.

In short, I stand by what I wrote.

Note that 24.7.0 and 31.0 were released at the same time, apparently with a 24.6.0->31.0 update configured for the release channel (which is now the only channel since 24.0). Automated updates are initially throttled (i.e., not everybody gets them at the same time to avoid congestion of the servers) and then offered unthrottled to users after a few days. That's how I understood "Stock TB 24.6.0 users currently do not have a newer automatic update. Eventually it will, when TB31 is deemed 100% solid." (but it may be equally understood the way I thought it would happen, with a delayed automated migration at 24.8.0 > 31.2.0 instead).

The motivation for moving to the new branch directly may have been to offer "normal" users the newest bug fixes and added/improved features as soon as possible, then assuming that organizational users would usually repackage and deploy 24.7.0 themselves anyway (which is what you are doing) and thus wouldn't care. Still though, this release and the update could have been handled a bit better...

On a side note, OpenSUSE (Linux) offers 24.7.0 in their build-service repositories for 13.1, but not (yet) 31.0. 8-)

If there are any security and or stability bug fixes that cannot wait for next Release then there will be a chemspill update where last number will increment up by one like for example if there was one before next Release it would change from 24.7.0 to 24.7.1

True, but in the past the third level was only added when needed (e.g., 3.0 instead of 3.0.0 and 3.0 instead of 3.0.0; but then 24.0.0 was the first version with the third-level zero, I think). Thus, intuitively you'd go with 24.7 rather than 24.7.0.

the same with Fedora, only offers 24.7.0, not sure if/when Fedora will use Tb31 esr builds

going by the release notes of Tb31 there aint no point in going to tb31. might as well as stay with tb24.7.0 , probably best to wait fo the next tb esr an then update to it

The release notes are useless at this time, unless you want to dig through the bug list yourself. Someone needs to go through the list and find the highlights so that they can be emphasized on the front page (bug 1042526).

The 24.0 ESR is only going to be for a couple more updates at most so 38.0 ESR is too long a ways to wait and be behind several fixes in meantime.
