If I create a second profile to cover transferring all my mails etc, from my old XP Thunderbird account to my new Win 10 account,
how do I select which profile is default and thereafter switch between profiles quickly as needed ?

Create a Windows shortcut that includes the -P command line switch so that the Profile Manager launches and you can choose which profile to use for a particular session. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager#Windows
