Can Thunderbird (be made to) spell check simultaneously in two or more languages?

No (AFAIK). However, one horrible kludge would be to add words from the second language to your personal dictionary. If you mainly write in one language and use a very limited vocabulary in a second language that might be viable. Besides the extra work to add the words to the personal dictionary you run the slight risk of getting suggestions for corrections to spelling errors made in the first language, from words in the second language (due to the personal dictionary).
