Mailbox alert

I'd very much like to set up a sound when new mail arrives, but i'm having problems doing so. I've added the "Mailbox Alert" add-on but when i try setting the options to use it, i get no where. I checked the "Play a Sound" box and the "Use the following sound file" box, but when i try browsing, i don't see any sound files to choose from.
HELP would be appreciated.

What version of Thunderbird are you using? The change log implies it supports up to version 69 but when I install it in version 68.1.0 I don't see it added to tools -> add-ons -> options which implies its installed but not working ([possibly because it hasn't been converted to a WebExtension based add-on)

Does the built-in functionality work if you disable or uninstall the add-on? Try using the default system sound. I've found that very small .wav files do nothing, there seems to be a minimum size.

Try some of the files at https://www.thesoundarchive.com/email.asp . I verified the one at https://www.thesoundarchive.com/email/pbchain.wav works (you need to click on the vertical three dots to get the download link).

There are *.wav files in "C:\Windows\Media" folder.

Running 68.1.0. Don't know what you mean by "Does the built-in functionality work if you disable or uninstall the add-on?" You both have identified .wav files that can be used, but how do i get them to show up in the sound files to be browsed?

Sorry, don't wish to be stupid, but health concerns are not allowing to grasp this.

Use menu path Tools->Options->General->When new messages arrive. Make sure that "Play a sound" has a check mark in the box.
Click on the "Browse" button and use the file manger functionality displayed to search for and navigate to the directory in which your Windows installation has stored .wav files. Pick any file to "Open" then click on the "Play" button to hear what it sounds like. Once you've selected the alert sound you want, click on the "OK" button at the bottom right of the Options dialogue box.

Dan, this now works. However, what i'm hearing is "You've got mail". I was hoping to setup a sound like a dinner bell or something like that? Short and sweet!

You can select any .wav file you have available on your computer. Just do a search in Windows for files with that extension (WAV).

If you don't find anything you like on your local system you could do a web search for free .wav files.

http://soundbible.com/tags-phone-ring.html has numerous ringing phone .wav files, and http://soundbible.com/tags-bell.html numerous bell sound .wav files
