Thunderbird, Gmail & Passkeys

Post by Rocketman »

I understand the issues of using TB with Gmail these days since google really doesn't want 3rd party email programs accessing email accts. Most of my Gmail accts in TB have app passwords. Will TB be able to access these accts in the future with passkeys? For now, google says we can still access our accts using our passwords, but anytime google feels like it, it can disallow passwords & require passkeys, which isn't far-fetched.

I don't know about Thunderbird, but I read that Firefox is working on passkeys.

Firefox 120 release date is in November 2023.

I think it's too early to worry about the end of passwords. The browser makers haven't even fully implemented passkeys yet.

Ricky Mondello is a software engineer and engineering manager at Apple, working on web authentication.

I don't see why Thunderbird can't access your accounts with passkeys, but you may need to use a hardware authentication device.
