Thunderbird is coming.

Post by seb »

Thunderbird seems finally to be coming: http://seb.delahaye.net/phoenix/thunderbird.html (this is a cached version of the bonsai query, in order not to flood bonsai).
From the all.js file, the first release is going to be 0.1a.

It also seems that the Minotaur and Thunderbird efforts have merged (though I don't think work had already begun on Thunderbird).

For those of you not familiar with the Thunderbird name, it's going to be a separate email client based on Mozilla Mail (just like Phoenix is a separate browser based on Mozilla Navigator). More info here: http://texturizer.net/phoenix/faq.html#1.9 (David, the link in this Q&A is dead, since the old forums are gone).

(I borrowed the original bonsai query on http://gemal.dk/ - thanks to him)

This is good news. The only reason I use Mozilla most of the time instead of Phoenix is because I have to load it anyway to get the e-mail clien and calendar.

Thanks to whomever got this rolling.

It will be based off of 1.3 (or 1.4a... whatever) riiight? Wouldn't want to lose my bayesian filters. :(

Wonder if Arvid is planning on coming up with icons for it, or if thunderbird has gone through legal... wouldn't want people getting used to Thunderbird and find out some other company has the rights to the name, would be kinda scary to see a whole new name thread pop up for a mail client.

I guess so, yes.. Phoenix is also based on the latest Mozilla trunk, so the same would also make sense for TB.

There aren't even any official builds yet.
I hope Arvid will port Qute to Tbird, but let's wait till the first builds come out first :)

Yes, the branch was created from the Mozilla 1.3 branch(March 12th, 2003).

Thunderbird forums

If thunderbird turns out to be as popular as Phoenix/Fooby/whatever will it get its own forum? It would be the first non-browser app (AFAIK) to have one at mozillazine but it doesn't seem like the Phoenix forum is the best place for it.

No, it's a separate program. Just like Phoenix is.

If it is O Express you 'll have a chance but if it is Oulook and you use it time/contact function you maybe will stick on it ?

Is it planned to have these side too ?

I'm planning to come up with icons, yes.

Apparently they're checking if "Thunderbird" infringes on trademarks. It is called Minotaur currently.

Actually, it seems to be called Thunderbird now, if you look at the all.js file and the CVS checkins.

Thunderbird/Minotaur is 'themeable'? Like Sylpheed-Claws (currently porting Phoenity to it)?
