TB 30B3 News : this should not be happening! arrgggggh!

Post by samspade78 »

Under gentoo on AMD64 with window manager xfce I use the latest thunderbird-bin available on gentoo today:
mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-bin version 3.0_beta3
I have 3 LINGUA installed: (deutsch french english)
"linguas_de linguas_en linguas_fr "
I start thunderbird-bin in a xterm and uses TB for reading some usenet newsgroup in french related to my ISP (free) services
e.g proxad.free.adsl (those groups are not on general access)
It seems that each time I collapse a thread of posts after reading some of them, the following message is output in the xterm:
"this should not be happening! arrgggggh!"
The message may be output several times for one collapse.
As what can be peculiar, of course, being written in french, the messages include frequently accented characters and the newsgroup is in code ISO8859-15
Apart of that, I see nothing special.
Previous installed (locally compiled) version of thunderbird (2.0.022) does not protest on the same usenet newsgroup.

Note that the (error?) message would benefit from some context information ..and could probably be enhanced to ease to pinpoint the issue
Regards

additional checks.
Same abnormal message(s) are output when collapsing a thread of many posts, for other newsgroups in french, and also for newsgroup in english:
checked on alt.energy.renewable
of course might be related to the NNTP news server of my internet provider, or to something else in my linux configuration.
I have used method explained in:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging
to generate a log:

$ export NSPR_LOG_MODULES=nntp:5
$ export NSPR_LOG_FILE=/tmp/nntp.log
$ thunderbird-bin --jsconsole &
and just accessed group alt.energy.renewable and read (expanded) a thread made of 2 messages:
subject: At $1 per Watt, the iTunes of Solar Energy Has arrived

The TB log file (164 lines) - in which I did not see something outstanding- is available at least for one month at:

As a complement, I have just installed TB 3.0B4 which is available for gentoo users as a "version bump" (diversion from the official portage tree)
found at: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=287881
After installation, the version number reads now:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.1.4pre) Gecko/20090915 Thunderbird/3.0b4

Only en-us is available under gentoo as a LINGUA and then, there are no more funny messages when expanding threads in usenet news.
So I will repeat the test later when non english LINGUAS will be available.

Looking at the source code it seems to be an issue with the Global Database indexing system that is new in Thunderbird 3: http://mxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/search?string=arrgggggh. I'd suggest that you search Bugzilla@Mozilla for a related bug report or file a new one.
