^ Joe, you might want to bump up the version numbers. ;)

I am running version Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:40.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/40.0a2 ID:20150518004005 CSet: 23286f787689 but addons don't all work - seems that this is due to signed extension checking causing the lightning and gdata provider plus nightly tester tools to give a warning message. There is a message on each of the addons in the tab at Tools->Addons saying "Lightning could not be verified for use with Earlybird. Proceed with caution" and similar for the other addons - plus a link which refers to the page at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Addons/Extension_Signing

It seems on further checking that nightly tester is working despite the warning, but the lightning extension fails to show the calendar and events pane.

I presume that this is being resolved but I could not find a bug report to track progress.

Edit: Looking at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.c ... ned-addons

Presumably in Thunderbird to disable extension signature checking maybe I will try the suggestion in that report:

i.e. Go to "about:config".
Search for "xpinstall.signatures.required".
Set it to "false"

This would presumably in the case of current Earlybird need to go to Prefs->Advanced and find the config editor and then look for that "xpinstall.signatures.required" line and unset it though I haven't tried it yet. On the other hand maybe the lightning extension has a bug that came with the Thunderbird version bump to V40? If so then I guess that will be fixed in the coming days. However I still can't find a link to a bug page for the Lightning extension?

Thunderbird 38.0 will not ship on the same date as Firefox 38.0 but will
likely be delayed a couple of weeks.

We are approaching the originally scheduled date of the release of
Thunderbird 38, which would be May 12 following the standard Mozilla
release calendar. But there are still a number of regressions that we
are working on, and last week's beta was the first beta that was feature
complete. That means we will not be ready to ship according to the
original schedule. A current estimate of when we will ship Thunderbird
38.0 is approximately May 26.

THUNDERBIRD_38_0b6_BUILD1 has been tagged (still from comm-beta, but off the THUNDERBIRD_38_VERBRANCH branch which is going to be merged into comm-esr38).

This kills Lightning and many other extensions with a binary component

Mitigating patch landed on mozilla-central, introducing a build-time switch to allow binary XPCOM components again:
  • #1165428 Restore support for binary components in extensions on a per-application basis
Patch for comm-central build config approved, yet has to land:
  • #1166842 Re-enable binary extensions for comm-central
