Is there a file somewhere that tracks the date, time and version when you update Thunderbird?

Try the update.xml file in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Thunderbird\updates\* folder.

Try looking in C:\Users\WINUSERID\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\updates\RANDOMSEQUENCE\

Is Thunderbird installed on your system's C: drive?

Yes C drive. Turned on Show Hidden files. Sorry nothing there from both post above.
