Noobie questions

Post by Digiti »

Hello,
I am considering using build Mozilla 1.2. on my Win95b computer. I have several questions:
1. Will the installation of the Java 1.4x Runtime plug-in overwrite my 1.3.1 Java plug-in I am using with Opera 6?
2. How stable is Mozilla? What I mean is it prone to BSOD, Fatal Exception Errors in Windows? Will an error in the Mozilla program bring down the entire operating system?
Thanks for any information you provide.

1) No. And related to Mozilla itself.
2) No.

Very stable

Digiti,

I can't answer your first question, but I am sure that someone with more experience in that matter will offer good advice.

However, I can report on the stability of Mozilla on Win95b, since I have used Mozilla for more than a year on a Win95b machine (133 mHz 586 chip with only 64mb of RAM): Mozilla is rock solid. It has never given me a GP fault or BSOD. It has never brought down the whole system, despite the fact that my Win95b system does not meet the minimum system requirements recommended for the program. Rarely, I will experience the "This program has performed an illegal operation" error. Rarely. Less that other application written for Win95, in fact. Mozilla is that good.

The only thing different I did for the Win95 system was to install with the Quick Launch feature enabled. (You will see that option during install procedure.)

Thanks to everyone who replied. I installed Mozilla 1.2 today. As a long time Netscape and I.E. user, I have to say this package really ROCKS!!! This is everything Netscape should have been. The fact that it works on so many platforms just adds to its worthiness. Keep up the good work everyone!. I will put it through its paces.

After installing java 1.4x I´ve read on the sun-site that I should have deinstalled java 1.3x before. I didn´t matter, I´ve got no problems having both ( or three?) of these plugins on Win98 and Win98SE.
But look at that link:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/jre/install-windows.html

... is supported on Microsoft Windows 98 (1st or 2nd edition), Windows NT 4.0 with with Service Pack 5 or later, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or later, running on Intel hardware.
...
Trying to install the Java 2 Runtime Environment on a non-supported version of Microsoft Windows or on a machine that doesn't have a sufficiently up-to-date Service Pack will cause the installer to generate this warning: "We recommend that you do not install ...
...

Thats only a recommendation, like Pentium 166 and 48 MB of RAM.
You should have 40 megabytes of free disk space before attempting to install the Java 2 Runtime Environment.

So with win95 you are on your own, but I don´t think java1.3x will be destroyed.
Even if that should happen, you can download it from sun.

A lot of info, not very useful for non-java-programmers.
Have a look, maybe it´s telling you why 1.4.1 is better.

I have not installed Java 1.4 yet, but Mozilla 1.2 works well with Java 1.3.1 anyway.

Have a look at the 1.4 licence:
