Intelligent automatic message filtering and processing

I wonder if there is a documented interface or API for how to plug in (external?) programs for
intelligent filtering and processing of email. There is a lot of research going on on this and
a clearly documented and easy to use interface would sparc a lot of interest in the
research community. Mozilla (and optionally NS) would benefit by this in that it would
soon have not one but a selection of intelligent email assistants that you could use
to fight spam and organize your emails. Doing this right would certainly be a valuable
investment in the future of the MailNews client.
