Ah and keep in mind that, although it won't likely be the case, after 2.99 there is 2.100, then 2.101, then 2.102 and so on.

Nah I think it will be changed 3.X (if it ever gets that high) as many users misread version numbers and period places enough as is. For example some misread the single digit numbers after the two like 2.3.x as a newer version compared to say a 2.2x release like 2.26.

Major updates to Composer and serious theme work would be worthy of a 3.0. I'd love to see a 3.0 release put out at the same time as a Firefox/Gecko X0.0 release so the version numbers are a bit easier to keep track of.
