Will Seamonkey follow Firefox into ads serving?
This story:
http://news.slashdot.org/story/15/05/22 ... efox-users
is simply an outrage. They are building ad-serving into the browser itself now? Firefox is dead, dead, dead.
But now I am wondering if Seamonkey will be able to avoid this? Can the ad-serving code be removed without major rewriting?
The next question, of course, is whether Seamonkey can continue once Firefox is dead. No one will use it anymore, and it wil sink to some tiny portion of the browser community. Probably single digits. Will Mozilla just give up and close their doors then?

Firefox is far from dead. Did you note that those ads will only be displayed in the "New Tab" page, and that that page can be configured to include or not include such offerings?

With Firefox, you can set a new tab to be a blank page again. Change this setting in about:config:
browser.newtab.url -> about:blank
SeaMonkey does not have that setting so far.

No one answered the real question, will Seamonkey be able to avoid this?

My view on ads in software programs is pretty well documented, but you need to live in the real world and not assume that everyone is like you.
How many Firefox users? 200 - 300 million? Yet Adblock Plus has less than 23 million users. 80%+ of Firefox users either don't care about ads or are maintaining their hosts file even as I write. I know which I reckon is more likely.

Very observant, guess why that would be.
I suggest you go find the SeaMonkey devs and ask.

They may be able to avoid it if users like you use the donations page and donate.

Not many people use it now. Last I saw was ~140,000 compared to the millions that use Firefox.

That's the old routine we used to use to shut people up here when they complained about the forum running slow - viewtopic.php?p=2902734#p2902734

Oh, you mean just shut down the forum as there is no point in keeping it going since it's frowned on to ask reasonable questions here?
Would it not be better to just not respond if you don't have anything useful to contribute to the discussion?

I mean that the only people that can give a qualified answer to that question are the SeaMonkey devs.

If your idea of contributing is to seek to take offence where none exists, then yeah, you shouldn't respond here.

It's easy enough to opt out in Firefox, and SeaMonkey doesn't even have a New Tab Page to begin with.
Tip of the day: If it has "toolbar" in the name, it's crap.

Sorry Frank. You're post bugged me as it sounded like one of the typically wise a** responses I see in forums. I'm usually a bit thicker skinned than that.
My apologies.
My apologies.
