Sea Mmonkey gmail setup

Post by alsoran »

Please, give this old dummy step by step instructions for setting up my gmail account in Sea Monkey
1) I goto Preferences
2) I goto mail and newsgroups
3) I enter https://mail.google.com/mail/....etc
... and then I am stuck
I don't know the incoming smpt or the ourgoing smtp or any numbers.

when my internet provider gave me an email address, I was able to set it up.
But I can't figure out with gmail and I no longer have an email service with the internet provider

Thanks
Pete

Server for incoming:
pop.gmail.com
SSL/TLS [this should automatically set port to "995"]
TLS Cerytficate

Server for outgoing:
smtp.gmail.com
SSL/TLS [this should automatically set port to "465"]
Normal password

For both servers you must provide Gmail user name as full e-mail address (e.g. johnexample@gmail.com)

But first you must enable POP function within Gmail account:
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/ ... 49987&rd=1

If you want IMAP instead of POP... well, I can't help you with this because I'm not using it.

1) Instead of enabling POP, enable IMAP for your Gmail account: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en

2) Use these server settings for incoming:
Server: imap.gmail.com
Connection security: SSL/TLS
port 993
Authentication method: Normal password

POP is storing messages on e-mail client side (e.g. in SeaMonkey); except incoming - they're on server, naturally.

IMAP is storing everything on servers (incoming, outgoing, drafts etc.). Advantage is that you can use one e-mail account from more than one computer. Disadvantage is... you can use one e-mail account from more than one computer... and everything is on server(-s)... :-"

E-mail client IMAP account is synchronizing messages with IMAP server (to have it offline when needed). But it means message(-s) deleted from server will be deleted from e-mail client. At least it worked this way in SeaMonkey 1.x when I was forced to use IMAP server for one of my e-mails. Since then I don't like IMAP.

On the flip side, if you suffer local file corruption and are using POP, you lose everything.
Been there, done that.

You can still LMOS (leave messages on server) with POP.
(I assume SeaMonkey Mail can do that.)
Anyhow...
