Do you mean any kind of images or only embedded images and not background images? For embedded images, I can simply drag and drop them onto my desktop to save them. For a background image, I need to use a screen capture.

You can usally do this via Page Info on the media tab for these. Ocassionally do this for ebay images.

The time might come where it needs to be retired if google and the other ilk like facebook ahh I mean shiny new meta pulls a few more stunts and make it unusable generally but not so far. If google or facebook breaks I personally don't care and avoid their services. Does not mean I won't try to get new features in to support them again and I already did a few times. But it is an uphill battle.

What I promise is to quit helping with support issues at least to the people who think everything is free for them and whining helps. And I already did in a few cases.

FRG,

As I go way back to the original, with the passage of time, many no longer understand just how important having this kitchen sink browser is, not just for everyday use (live long and prosper), but for the record.

Let's end this year with a few tips -

PDFs - I was reading this, rather long-winded, thread - viewtopic.php?p=14908393#p14908393

...and the subject of this PDF extension came up - https://github.com/IsaacSchemm/pdf.js-s ... /releases/

Fair play to the author, but this is a really basic PDF reader, but is slightly better than the built-in garbage in Firefox. 'Subjective' opinion? Well, you tell me, use that extension to open this - https://esd.ny.gov/sites/default/files/ ... 02-GPP.pdf ...oh, lordy, lordy, boss, it appears not to work, guess it wasn't subjective after all. :)

That's what you'll get with many technical/legal type pdfs. It's fine for simple pdfs, but runs out of steam on the more complex ones, so although I use it sometimes, it's important to know how to quickly disable it and bring the proper PDF readers into play. I say that because extension/built-in PDF readers also disable your existing PDF choices in Edit>Prefs>Browser>Helper App.. So, choices -

#1. Third button on the right in that pdf tab is the Download button, hit that and after 10 seconds(!) the Options Dialog box appears. If you have that on 'Ask' then you can either view it in something better or download it.

#2. Open Addons Manager and Disable it and then the PDF Options in Helper Apps will work again.

I usually choose #2 as you will if you hit a batch of 20+ legal pdfs that you damn well can't read! All that said, the extension will be fine for most people, but if I don't write the above tricks, then some clown is sure to start a 'PDF Extension & The Future of SeaMonkey' thread when they get stuck.

.....

So, back to that thread above, was good advice given there? I think so, it would have been better for the OP just to ditch the 2007 version of Acrobat 8.1 and install the latest Acrobat or Foxit (my choice) but that can cause setting up issues, that can confuse people..

As the OP was a self-confessed old guy* then the easy 'magic bullet' install of one extension was the right choice and I would have suggested the same there.

* this is a 'good thing' as you know how to tailor your answers so that problems are quickly resolved. Certainly better than the closet old guy, who is always on the verge of going ape, responds to everything with 'I'm fully aware that..' and yet, in practise, cannot find their own backside with both hand or, more likely, have forgotten where their backside is. :P

FaceBook - a problem came up a good few months back where a censoring script (F/B has a LOT of scripts!) was preventing you replying on some of its Comment Reply boxes.

solution - type a word or two into your Searchbar or the input box on a search page, Copy it and use Ctrl + V to paste it into the Reply box and you can then type your reply as usual. A bizarre fix to a problem that a couple of other browsers also has, but it works and I've been using it for ages now.

This is the fix that I was prevented from writing about here - viewtopic.php?p=14904755#p14904755 You really cannot reward bad behaviour or you just get chaos.

......

Why do I use Facebook, when its layout is awful and its privacy side non-existent? Well, if you have a classic/rare car or a specialised hobby then, these days, your like-minded fellows will be found on various Facebook Groups. Important to know if your want spare car parts, for example. Conventional forums, like this one here are vanishing and being replaced with those 'groups. Not like they are replacing like with like though, on a proper forum you get proper well thought out replies, whereas on Facebook it's all shallow 'faux, I'm really casual' 3 line replies at best. Which is odd as, unlike Twitter, there is no word limit, but that's how it is. Oh, and smilies, even the most vacuous comment will immediately be swamped with loads of :turn-l: :2gunfire: :halfrobot: :vamp: :x-mas:  :er: :monkey: :omg: :furious: :lildevil: :eyeroll2: :locked: for no obvious reasons that I've ever been able to ascertain.

tl:dr? Facebook seems to turn grown adults into some bizarre shallow teenager stereotypes. However, it is what it is and these are the times we live in.

Finally -

Finally, this made me laugh - viewtopic.php?p=14913643#p14913643

The pdf viewer has some flaws, especially with forms, but the file, you have problems with, just displays fine for me here with Isaacs extension :-"

Yes, perhaps not the best example.

Try these 2 simpler examples and try to edit/highlight/add text/anything ...with Isaacs extension :-"

Isaacs extension unfortunately doesn't support forms, maybe he will add this feature someday with an update. [-o<

Listen up, my 'R'nR' is ending so you may well be back on your own after this post. (I'm sure you'll manage).

'til then, smoke 'em, if you got 'em. :)

For a while now, I've been using a different override concept to get some minor sites to fall into place, without having to open M$ Edge.

A site that I also sometimes use, but not often, is LinkedIn and that just hasn't worked right in SM for ages...using this concept, now it does.

Concept - Although many big sites have their own apps for Android (or Mobile, in general) it's less well known that some, not that many, also have 2 versions of their websites, i.e. desktop and mobile. Mobile version sites are always laid out differently, often have different coding, but contain the needed features, albeit without added frills (default SM users already know this, considering their default UA string has been pointing them to the simplified Mobile version of Google Search for ages now)

So, how about testing a mobile UA on various perp sites to see if any have mobile versions and if they then work?

...and it seems https://www.linkedin.com does.

Fix - about:config>right click any entry>New>String>

1st box enter general.useragent.override.linkedin.com > click OK >

2nd box enter Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 5) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/71.0.4472.120 Mobile Safari/537.36 > click OK

> You're done.

Notes: Copy values (in bold above) and paste into a text editor (or Notepad) before going to about:config. Copy the 1st value and paste it into the 1st Box as above and click OK. When the 2nd box appears, then type just aaa and click OK,

Now, copy the 2nd value and find your new entry (the aaa one) Right click it, select Modify and paste your 2nd copied value into the 'aaa' box that appears. You're done.

I'm explaining the full procedure, as many people seem to get confused as to how to enter both values, when you can only copy one value(or anything) at a time. This is how that's done.

Frank :)

Frank,

Truly impressive and invaluable kludge for the useragent issue with SeaMonkey. I have saved it to my Gecko FAQ file and used it already for LinkedIn, the only social media site I find worthwhile.

......Tks,

Hi Nick, no problem, glad that you found it useful.

Yeah, that perp site was an unusual one where you had a website that no normal UA string override was going to make it work as the site coding was not, I reckon, supported by SM.

So, I used a Mobile UA string there to force it to use its mobile version that has different coding...which is supported by SM.

Btw - I noticed on another thread you wanted a YouTube override? I'd suggest, method just as before and use

Box 1 - general.useragent.override.youtube.com

Box2 - Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0

Every part (there are 6 or 7) of YT will then work for you :) - at the time of writing.

Note: The above 'Box2' (String Value) is for Windows users, Linux and Mac users should adapt their existing UA string (see Help>About Seamonkey) but do note the rv: version must match the Firefox version (60, in the above case)

Frank,

Thanks... I am slowly putting together a short list of affected sites that need overrides.

Instagram Website Tip - use this instead https://gramhir.com/ to view Instagram pages.

Instagram is a pretty worthless website, consisting mainly of vain, vacuous people taking constant photos of themselves and posting them, endlessly, there. However, it's not all like that and it's also a site where professional artists post photos of their latest works, etc.

Trouble is, without being logged in, you can only view a few photos before getting this massive log in message. OK, you think, it says log in with your Facebook account (I think they are owned by them) and you get a 'Whoa! Suspicious Login Attempt !!!!' message and you get stuck there]. OK, I'll make an Instagram account instead, guess what you get? That's right, another 'Whoa! Suspicious Login Attempt !!!!'

*sigh* all this to view some photos. I gave up at that point, but the Net is full of this nonsense - https://www.google.com/search?q=suspici ... &aq=t&rls=

tl;dr? What does work good though is using https://gramhir.com/ to view Instagram pages.
